Inside This Assessment

Abstract reasoning is the ability to think laterally, examine problems in unique and unusual ways and make logical connections between different concepts. Candidates with strong abstract reasoning abilities are likely to be creative while solving novel problems. Moreover, they are likely to learn new skills quickly and can process ambiguous information efficiently.

Mercer|Mettl's abstract reasoning test is a nonverbal test that evaluates the abstract reasoning ability of the test takers working in a variety of individual contributor or managerial roles. This test is suitable to be used in both recruitment and development settings. In addition, recruiters can use this test for a global audience across the industries for various job roles, more preferably for entry-level or experienced level positions.

Test takers are presented with a three by three (9 cells) matrix that consists of eight cells containing geometric shapes and one empty/blank cell/cell with a question mark. They are asked to find the logical rule(s) that govern how the sequence progresses horizontally or vertically and identify the shape that should fill the blank space.

Mercer|Mettl's abstract thinking test has been developed in line with the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (EEOC,1978), the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's Principles for the Validation and Use of Personnel Selection Procedures (SIOP, 2003), EFPA Test Review Model and the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing developed jointly by the American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, and National Council on Measurement in Education (1999).

Use this test for:

  • Recruitment: Identify the suitable hires for your organization by using this test.
  • Learning and Development: Understand the current proficiency level of an employee; train and develop employees effectively.
  • Identification of High Potential: Have a healthy pipeline of future leaders.
